In the late 1960's, the government took interest in a remote sandbar on the eastern shore of the Yucatan Peninsula. The resort of Cancun (kahn-KUHN) was born.

But now The Riviera Maya is a Most important destination in Yucatan Peninsula (Quintana Roo State).

We do not know if there exists an exact spot where the Maya Riviera starts but the general consensus is that once you get onto highway 307 along the coast in Quintana Roo you are pretty well in the Riviera Maya.

This highway runs from Cancun all the way down to Belize. The Riviera Maya ends after Tulum and the Costa Maya begins. The most popular travel destination in the Riviera Maya is Playa del Carmen which is where you get the ferry to go to Cozumel. After Playa del Carmen the next town of any great size is Tulum.
